No Marketing System = No Home Business

I've said it before and it bears repeating.

When I got online looking for ways to supplement my income back in 1997 I didn't have my own product(s) to sell. So I decided on a niche, spent money to buy inventory and set up a web site.

My kids now help run that site and fulfil product sales. The biggest lesson I learned is that it's a LOT of hard work selling your own products and running a shipping operation!

After reading Robert Allen's Multiple Streams of Income book I decided to get on his conference calls to learn about OTHER ways to make money online since I didn't have my own products. That's when I first discovered affiliate programs.

Then whenever someone you send to that company buys something, you get paid a commission for it. It's a win-win situation. The company is looking for more people to promote their products and they only pay a commission when an actual sale is generated. As an affiliate, you don't have all the burden of providing the product or service, following-up, closing the sale, handling customer satisfaction issues, dealing with "problem people", etc. You just get people to the company's website and the company takes care of all that for you.

So being an affiliate is really a choice of what kind of business you want to run. Would you rather run a company that is responsible for providing the product or service, starting relationships with prospects, following up relentlessly to close the sale, shipping the product, handling returns, dealing with all the customer service issues including people who are only want to give you a hard time... Hey, a lot of people love doing those things and that's great. We need those kind of people and I'm deeply thankful for them myself in my product based business.

But believe me, if I were starting over again, I'd go the affiliate route every time - especially if there's a proven marketing SYSTEM associated with the program to help automate your marketing.

I like to use a "funded proposal" approach where I effectively get my marketing expenses repaid from part of the initial income I receive, then I make money longer term with the ongoing residual income side of the affiliate programs I am associated with.
All MLM programs offer you a replicated site that is coded with your personal affiliate details so you get credit for sales from you site. this is effectively your e-commerce site. The problem is Google and Bing are not going to index your replicated site because it is exactly the same as the corporate site. Your leader needs to have a way for you to integrate the replicated site in another UNIQUE site you own. In that way you'll build a highly personalized site with fresh content and you can expect to be indexed in the search engines.

Warnings

Be careful you don't get seduced into using Google Adwords for traffic before you understand how quickly your expenses can build up. For competitive keywords with a lot of traffic you can soon find yourself with a big check to pay to Google!

1) Use your signature line well. First of all you must read and abide by the rules of the forum lest you be accused of that evilest of all words: SPAM. Customer Service Is Everything...

I just experienced 3 days of basic living. No running water, no flushable toilets and no electricity.

Not fun.

The almost 3 feet of snow we got here in Earlysville, Virginia overwhelmed the local grid and Dominion Virginia Power couldn't cope.

Not only did it take 3 days to get us back online but the customer service we experienced was awful, pathetic and an example of what NOT to do.

Day 1 - only the automated service line was in operation despite a 3-4 day advance warning of the impending storm. The line said based on our account location we'd have power back by 5PM on the first day - We didn't.

Day 2 - I spoke to a real customer service agent on day 2. The emergency service operation was finally in service. When I gave my location the "Customer NO Service Agent" told me she had no information about my account and when I could expect to be reconnected. When I asked what the total number of people without power was in our area - she couldn' tell me that either. Surprising since the Dominion web site apparently had a map with outages - but of course I had no power to access it.

Later in the day another agent told me we'd have power by 5PM - we didn't.

Day 3 - Back to automated service and no real people to talk to. Automated system said we'd be back by 5PM. Perhaps unsurprisingly I was skeptical given the past record of saying when we would be reconnected.

As it happens we were reconnected a short time ahead of the deadline.

The moral of the story is - keeping your customer fully appraised and feeling like they know what's really going on is VITAL.

Now I know a 10-year storm event is challenging and VDOT didn't help with a lousy snow event strategy that left our local road unplowed and unsalted for 7 days after the snow ended! None-the-less Dominion Virginia Power needs to reassess its lack of accuracy when dealing with customers during a critical time.

I feel there are so many angles from which I could make a review of Andrew Hansen's new blogging software Firepow.

I thought I might focus here on one particular element of the program which I consider to be particularly intregal to the success of a blogger, namely, the ability to drive traffic to their blog.

If you've ever started a blog, or any form of website trying to earn some cash, you'll know it's not exactly a case of "if you build it they will come".

Even a great blog doesn't guarantee traffic and a major part of a bloggers focus has to be spreading the word about their blog in a variety of ways in order to continually increase traffic and profits.

Sure, I could have talked about the blog creation and management aspects of Firepow, which I know so many new online marketers and bloggers will find so valuable. But for me, I'm more concerned about how the program can help a user increase traffic and make more money.

Anyway, that said - I thought I'd make a brief mention of some such features of the program in order to open your eyes to the ways this program might be as much a benefit to you as I predict it will be for me.

In this post I'm going to talk about one such tool, Firepow Blogging Software, because I believe it's a cut above the rest in terms of it's flexibility of use, and overall effectiveness in accomplishing the three primary aims of blogging - creating a blog, managing it or maintaining it, and getting traffic to it.

It was hard to know where to start with this post because there are so many individual features of this software that could be mentioned.

Before even getting into the Wordpress panel of the site Firepow creates you've also got a site management tab where all your blogs can be managed from one place, an SEO tracking tool to monitor the search rankings of all your sites, and a task manager that tells you what needs to be done to maintain your blog/s and when.

I dare say though that the best things happen once you're actually IN the blog.

Employment News Still Bad, Companies Leave Employees Stranded

Sadly, the news in the media continues to be bad for individual employees as these recent headlines from the New York Times show:

1. The latest jobs report showed a loss of 263,000 jobs last month and reinforced a feeling that the expansion will be tentative.

2. Private equity firms, former executives and Wall Street investment banks profited as the Simmons Bedding Company fell into bankruptcy, devastating its bondholders and employees.

After 133 years in business Simmons is going into bankruptcy while it's private equity owners made money. The outlook for its employees looks bleak.

This is just one more example - as if we needed any more - that companies don't really value employees anymore.

Wake up, look around and see the signs - they are everywhere.

Census Data Shows Why You Need Your Own Business

Yesterday the Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey was published. It includes a wealth of data comparing the nation’s profile in 2008 with that of 2007.

Nationally, 15.5 percent of people aged 65 and older participated in the labor force in 2008. A smaller share of Americans married, drove to work alone, owned their own home or moved to a new residence last year than the year before.

Median earnings of men in the United States who worked full-time in 2008, year-round were $45,556. For women, the median earnings were $35,471, or 77.9 percent of men’s earnings. On average, earnings fell 1.2% over 2007.

In plain terms, this means we are still undervaluing women in the workforce, we are earning less than before, more seniors find themselves in a position where they HAVE to work after normal retirement age and we have less money to do things we want like get married or move house.

All in all, not good statistics on the state of affairs we find ourselves in.

The REAL news is not the continuing depressing statistics but the news the media commentators are not reporting...namely the increasing number of people who are no longer prepared to sit idly by and let their standard of living go down!

Instead they are rising up and starting their own businesses in increasing numbers.

TIME Magazine Cover: Out Of Work in America

It's a BIG deal when you get to be on the cover of TIME magazine. Celebrities send out press releases when they get on.

It's not so good to be on this week's cover or inside pages. The main topic is "Out of work in America". It chronicles why double digit unemployment may be here to stay - and how to live with it.

The Solution to State Employee Job Cuts and Furloughs

Yesterday the Governor of the State of Virginia, Tim Kaine, announced 567 state employee layoffs, cut college funding by at least 5 percent, postponed until next July the 2-percent raises state workers were to receive next month and would implement a one-day furlough of state employees on the Friday before next Memorial Day.

Phew! Tough? To the VA State employees concerned sure...but by comparison to their colleagues in California, they "got off lightly". With up to 3 days per month furloughed in California, these "days off" without pay represent real hard pay cuts.

So how can State employees make up the difference?

It's ironic and sad. On the eve of Labor day weekend we learned the US unemployment rate in August 2009 hit 9.7%, up from 9.4% in July. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - September 2, 2009).

So we are effectively "celebrating" the lack of work this Labor Day weekend.
